Study Predicts Decades of Global Cooling Ahead

In the mid-20th century, a period of global cooling began that lasted about 30 years leading to media discussions of the possibility of a new little ice age. Then, in the late 1970’s, a period of global warming began that lasted about 20 years, leading to predictions of a global warming disaster. In both cases, the average change in temperature was less than 1 degree. In 2006, former vice president Al Gore predicted that we had just 10 years to save the planet from scorching due to global warming. If he’s right, that means that we’ve got less than a year left. Unfortunately for Mr. Gore, the minor warming episode seems to have ended in the late 1990’s with the result that there has been no significant warming in about 18 years.

Softening the Public for GM Babies

There has been a flurry of news reports in favor of a new technology that could edit the genome of human embryos, making changes that would be passed down the generations. Last week, a statement was issued by an influential group of scientists which in effect asked for an open door to permit the genetic editing of human embryos for therapeutic purposes.

Should We Have Faith in Science?

A few years ago I came across a university professor who fancied himself an evolutionary psychologist. He seemed to believe that xenophobia (fear of foreigners) was correlated with religious beliefs and he was preparing to conduct a study, using his students, to prove it. What are the odds that he will do an unbiased, scientific study? Results of new “scientific studies” are reported every day. Can you trust them?
